Gospel Legend Tommye Young-West Returns After A 10-year Hiatus with Brand New Single “He Lifted Me” Featuring Gospel Pioneer Dr. Bobby Jones
Recording Artist Signs New Deal with Rock Daniel Records’ CEO & Industry Veteran Darrell King
(Dallas, TX) – January 16, 2018 – Lovers of traditional Gospel music will remember the name Tommye Young-West. Fans of this dynamic singer and worship leader enjoyed songs like “Why Did He Do It” and “Created to Worship”. Some will remember her contributions on Bishop TD Jakes’ song, “A Path In The Sea” while others will recall her unforgettable performance on the Georgia Mass Choir’s “He’s My All In All”. Still more may remember her as a platinum-selling R&B artist in the 70s, but now this gifted vocalist is back. With decades of music under her belt – including five Gospel albums – Tommye Young-West returns in grand style with a churchy, hand-clapping song, “He Lifted Me” featuring the inimitable Dr. Bobby Jones. The song is currently available on iTunes, Amazon and other digital retail outlets.
Young-West is excited to be back and “He Lifted Me” is the perfect song for her return. An up-tempo track, it’s church music at its finest. What makes her comeback even more special is the single’s featured guest, Dr. Bobby Jones. “I have been honored to be a guest on his show for years,” she says. “For him to be such a distinguished man and a trailblazer in this industry and to be on my new song, it was an amazing blessing to have him on this recording,” says Tommye. Dr. Jones was thrilled at the collaboration as well. “Tommye Young-West is one of the few female traditional Gospel singers we are blessed to still have,” Dr. Jones says. “We need her to continue to carry forth this great spiritual and cultural vocal music form.”
“He Lifted Me” is the first single from her forthcoming album and her initial release with new record label Rock Daniel Records, founded by long-time music industry executive Darrell King. Young-West is the label’s flagship artist and the record company’s first full-length release will be Tommye’s upcoming project, scheduled to drop in February 2018. The CD will showcase the traditional stylings that Tommye is known for. Fans of the legend should expect songs that bring back memories of old time church, but she’s determined to include music for the younger generation as well. She is passionate about providing songs with lyrics that – as she says – “take you from Monday to Tuesday”. She wants her music to “turn people’s lives around” and give them hope and encouragement. “There will be praise and worship music, choir music, all types of music”, says Tommye. There will truly be something for everyone.
A gifted songstress, Tommye Young-West has been singing for most of her life. Her father, Bishop T.L. Young, was her pastor and she honed her musical skills within the four walls of the church. At Church of God in Christ conventions, she caught the attention of trailblazers like Dr. Mattie Moss Clark and James Cleveland, both of whom guided her singing career. She also caught the attention of mainstream music heads and ultimately signed a major label deal. She released a song called “Do You Still Feel The Same Way” and the single went platinum. Before she knew it, she was opening up for artists like Teddy endergrass & The Blue Notes, Fred Payne and Stevie Wonder. Even with the success, she still longed for her Gospel roots. She went back to Gospel music when she was tapped to record a song for the soundtrack of a Cicely Tyson film named “A Woman Called Moses”, an NBC made for TV movie. Since that time, she’s performed with the Dallas and North Carolina Symphony Orchestras and sung with artists such as Shirley Caesar, Yolanda Adams, Donald Lawrence, Kim Burrell, Mary Mary, The Hawkins Family and the late Daryl Coley.
A celebrated vocalist, she’s received numerous awards and honorary doctorates during her decades in the music industry. She’s also the mother of singers Candy West and Chelsea West, notable singers in their own right. Ten years after the death of her beloved husband and manager, Calvin West, a man she was married to for 39 years, Tommye felt the time was right to start performing again. “It was tough when he passed,” she said. “My daughters helped me through that very difficult time. I know I am still here because I have a reason and a purpose. That’s why this song is so important to me. During the tough times, Jesus lifted me. It’s a message that everyone needs to hear. No matter what happens in life, Jesus can lift you up.” Connect with Tommye on social media on Facebook.
