LIST: Lowcountry schools make schedule changes due to anticipated severe weather on Thursday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Lowcountry schools are adjusting Thursday schedules ahead of expected severe weather. The following article will be updated as more information is released.

The Charleston County School District (CCSD) on Wednesday announced all afterschool activities and programs, including Kaleidoscope, will be cancelled on Thursday. All CCSD schools will be released three hours early.

First Baptist will dismiss early on Thursday as well. The James Island campus will dismiss at noon and the Downtown campus will dismiss at 12:10 p.m.

Officials from Dorchester District 2 have cancelled all extracurricular activities. Students will be dismissed early, with elementary schools dismissed at 10:30 a.m., middle schools dismissed at 11:30 a.m., and high schools, GAP, and Rollings Middle School of the Arts dismissed at 12:30 p.m. Extended day programs will remain open until 1:30 p.m.

Dorchester District 4 will operate on a half day Thursday, and all after school events are cancelled for the day. WMES, HES, CHES will dismiss at 11:30 a.m., HRMS and WHS will leave at noon, and SGMS will dismiss students at 12:15 p.m.

Berkeley County School District will operate on a half-day schedule. All after school activities and programs are cancelled.

Meanwhile, the Georgetown County School District said it will have an eLearning day on Thursday. The district said assignments will be posted by teachers on Thursday for students to complete and submit by Friday.

They say all Georgetown County School District facilities will be closed Thursday and employees are asked to work from home.

Williamsburg County School District will also have a virtual learning day due to the inclement weather. No meals will be delivered on Thursday.

In Colleton County, students were already scheduled for a virtual learning day – which will continue on Thursday – but school district staff will leave work locations at 12:00 p.m., according to the district. A vaccine clinic scheduled for CCSD staff has not been cancelled, and the schedule released to staff will continue as planned.

COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES:

Trident Technical College will move to e-learning Thursday at noon, at which time all college/campus sites will close.

Williamsburg Technical College has cancelled all in-person classes for Thursday, but online classes will continue.

Charleston Southern University plans to close campus at noon. All afternoon and evening classes will be online. Dining services will remain open, but all other on-campus, in-person events have been cancelled. The volleyball match vs. High Point has been postponed.

College of Charleston will close at 1:00 p.m. All classes after 1:00 p.m., including virtual, will be cancelled.

Charleston Cosmetology Institute will close at 1:00 p.m.

Storm Team 2 meteorologists say storm threats could include significant wind damage, 70 mph+, large hail up to golf ball size, and the potential for tornadoes as a cold front passes through the region.

The districts say they will continue to monitor weather conditions and will provide updates as needed.
