Military jet crashed near Beaufort; pilot and co-pilot OK

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities in Beaufort County said a military jet crashed near Halfmoon Island/Coosaw Plantation on Thursday afternoon.

Officials with Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort said a 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing F/A-18D Hornet crashed while conducting a routine flight in Beaufort. They said both Marines onboard the jet ejected with no injuries.

The crash happened just after 3:00 p.m.

Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said they were in contact with the pilot and co-pilot, both of which are safe.

“The aircraft crashed in an unpopulated area near Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and there was no damage to civilian property,” said officials with MCAS Beaufort.

Officials said the aircraft is assigned to Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 533 (VMFA(AW)-533), Marine Aircraft Group 31, 2nd MAW.

A safety investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the crash.
