SCDOT to begin resurfacing project on busy section of I-26

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The South Carolina Department of Transportation will be resurfacing a stretch of interstate highway beginning in June.

The resurfacing of an 11 mile portion of I-26 from nearly 1 mile east of Ashley Phosphate Rd. to a third of a mile west of US Highway 17A will be a major improvement for the highway.

Traffic volumes vary along this stretch of interstate from 77,000 to 123,000 vehicles per day, making it one of most heavily traveled areas in the state.

All work will be done at nighttime, from Sundays to Thursdays, to inconvenience the motoring public as little as possible. The approximate hours of work will be 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. There will be both single-lane and multi-lane closures during the resurfacing project.

The patching and resurfacing are part of a $10.9 million emergency contract to repair this deteriorating section of I-26.

Resurfacing will begin Tuesday night. The project is scheduled to be completed in October 2021.
