Three earthquakes reported Monday in the Lowcountry

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The United States Geological Survey (USGS) on Monday confirmed a 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Centerville, South Carolina at 6:21 p.m.

The USGS reports that the earthquake occurred about eight and a half miles away from Summerville and just under 12 miles away from Goose Creek.

Initially, the USGS reported the earthquake as a 2.9 magnitude, but the severity has since been updated.

“This happens periodically around here, it’s not really that unusual. It’s like hurricanes when they hit you. The bigger storms are more rare, so the bigger earthquakes are more rare than the smaller,” says Steve Jaume, Associate Professor of Geology and Environmental Geosciences at College of Charleston.

Home security video sent to News 2 from Nicole Abernathy showed the shaking in North Charleston along Dorchester Road and Ashley Phosphate Road.

The 3.3 magnitude earthquake was the third in the Lowcountry on Monday.

The first occurred near Ridgeville shortly after noon. USGS rated it 2.9 in magnitude.

A second smaller earthquake occurred nearby shortly after, but registered below 2.5, so it was not listed by the USGS. According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Geological Survey, the second earthquake ranked a 2.01 in magnitude.
