2 students arrested for having guns at Summerville High School
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities arrested two Summerville High School students on Wednesday after they were found with firearms on campus.
An individual alerted authorities after seeing a video of three students holding guns, according to the Summerville Police Department.
“Two Summerville Police Department School Resource officers and two Dorchester District Two security staff members immediately investigated the tip and located the juvenile with a loaded firearm,” officials said.
A second student was also found with a firearm.
Both were arrested and charged with carrying weapons on school grounds. They are being transferred to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
Summerville PD is encouraging students and staff to “say something if they see something.”
“Summerville Police Department does not tolerate criminal behavior, and anyone who chooses to break the law will be charged appropriately,” the agency said.
The school was placed on a “hold” for several hours while law enforcement conducted its investigation.
“Students and staff will remain in their classrooms in order to keep the hallways empty,” the school said in a message to parents. “Classroom learning will continue throughout the Hold, but students will not be able to change classes.”
Capt. Chris Hirsch said there were no injuries to students or staff.
