SLED investigating West Ashley officer-involved shooting; officer suffered hand injury

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating a Sunday evening officer-involved shooting in West Ashley.

The incident happened at 1925 Ashley River Road (Walgreens) just before 7:00 p.m.

Officials with the Charleston Police Department (CPD) said one of their officers encountered an armed individual, and at one point shots were fired. 

A source with the City of Charleston tells News 2 that an officer was injured in the hand and the suspect was reportedly injured as well. Neither injury is expected to be life-threatening.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital.

State police were asked to investigate since this was an officer-involved shooting. SLED has taken over as the lead investigating agency.

Police say the scene is contained and there is no threat to the public.

Ashley River Road is closed between Fuseler Road and Old Towne Road due to the investigation.
