Coyotes remain a major concern for beach communities
ISLE OF PALMS S.C. (WCBD) – Reports of coyote sightings around the Lowcountry are increasing lately, especially in area beach communities like Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island.
According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), coyote mating season runs from January through March each year, meaning coyotes are more active as they search for a mate.
Around this time each year, coyotes’ food sources decrease, meaning the animals spend more time and venture further hunting for food.
Experts say securing garbage bins and not putting food waste outside is essential to keeping coyotes away from your home.
Limiting outdoor time for small pets and ensuring they are well-supervised outside is also essential because they can become an easy target.
“This is the time of year when breeding takes place, and so with many species, there are increased movements, and increased activities are sometimes more viable. My advice would be to remove any potential attractiveness you have at home,” said Jay Butfiloski, a South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources department leader.
Officials say all coyote sightings should be reported to your local authorities and the Department of Natural Resources.
