Berkeley County secures additional funding for mega boat landing
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – A mega boat landing on Lake Moultrie is one step closer to being completed.
The 14-area boat landing is being constructed at the site of the old Atkins landing and campground and Lions Beach. Berkeley County recently announced they have millions of additional dollars that will go toward completing the project.
“I’m excited about it,” said Laura Gaskins, who lives near the landing. “I know a lot of people have said that they are not, but we think it’s going to be great.”
The project will include parking for 180 boat trailers and 180 vehicles. There will also be six new boat launch ramps, a dock, an event pavilion, and a walking trail. A public swimming beach will also be opened at the site.
“For me, that’s good- I have some mobility issues and need a nice, smooth place to walk- so that would be good for me, and it would be good for my child and my dog because we could take the dog and the child to the beach, my son. I’m excited,” she said.
This is a $6.5 million project. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is allocating $2M to the project, $1M will come from US Fish and Wildlife, and $1M will come from the state Water Recreation Fund.
There will also be a separate Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office dock and office which their Marine Patrol can use. That means they will be able to respond more quickly to lake emergencies.
“We have not been out on the water much in the last year but that’s something we plan to do in the future, and that would be really nice and it’s nice to have the police presence even if they are mostly trained on the water, it’s nice to have that police presence in the neighborhood,” she said.
Berkeley County officials say they’re hoping to have this project completed and open for the public in the summer of 2025.
