Berkeley Middle School students give back to local women’s organization

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — A group of Berkeley County Middle Schoolers recently positively impacted the community by donating fundraising money to a local nonprofit.

Twelve sixth-grade boys at Berkely Middle School meet monthly for small group sessions focused on mentoring and learning about leadership. The group held a fundraiser on Feb. 13 and 14, selling chocolate roses and candy for Valentine’s Day at school.

All of the products were sold, raising $450 for the group. The group donated the funds to the nonprofit My Sister’s House.

My Sister’s House provides resources and care to battered women and children who are victims of domestic violence. The group serves women in Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties.

Students in the small group told News 2 it felt great to help people in need.

“…it felt great to give away money to the homeless people and those kids and stuff,” said Marshaun, Berkeley Middle School 6th grader.

Principal Latanya Butler of Berkeley Middle School echoed how important it is to teach not only typical classroom subjects but also children how to be good humans in the world.

“You know, we can have children learn science, social studies, math, but what we really want are good humans, and projects like this show that we are teaching children how to be good humans,” said Principal Butler. “To me, that’s the most important thing is that we put out good citizens in society.”

Berkeley Middle said that word of what the group did spread to students in the 7th and 8th grades, and those students are discussing starting their own projects to help.
