Man struck by NCPD vehicle after exchanging gunfire with officers dies at hospital: SLED

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A man has died following a chase and shooting that involved North Charleston officers on Wednesday evening.

Officers with the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) were involved in a vehicle pursuit with a male suspect around 9:30 p.m., which came to an end on Highway 78 near Shipley Street.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said gunfire was exchanged between the subject and officers, and that a North Charleston Police Department vehicle struck the man.

State police said the man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man’s identity has not been released.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

NCPD requested SLED investigate the incident, which is standard for a shooting that involves police.

A spokesman for the North Charleston Police Department said all officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy.

The investigation is ongoing.
