$12 million ‘state-of-the-art’ sports complex set to replace Oakbrook YMCA

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — Dorchester County and Summerville YMCA have partnered to announce a $12 million investment that will bring a sports complex to the current location of the Oakbrook YMCA.

The county says highlights of the sportsplex include state-of-the-art turf sports fields and courts, multipurpose spaces, a concession building with restrooms, a playground, and easy access to the Sawmill Branch Trail System. In addition, the complex will offer year-round programs and activities.

Construction is expected to begin toward the end of Summer 2024 and is designed to cause as little interference as possible for current activities at the location.

Dorchester County says they used Tax Increment Financing (TIF) to keep tax hikes down for project financing. TIF allows governments to use the incremental increase in assessed value and property taxes to fund infrastructure improvements in a specific area without a tax increase, said the county.

$10,350,000 of the TIF funds were allocated towards the new sportsplex. The extra $2 million in funding was designated by the Legislative Designation.

“Revitalizing the Oakbrook region with upgraded transportation and utility infrastructure, enhanced lighting, a modern streetscape, and improved environmental, cultural, recreational, and educational services are priorities of the Oakbrook Redevelopment Plan,” says Chairman Todd Friddle, Dorchester County Council. “The Oakbrook Sports Complex aligns with our motto “Do More Dorchester” and will offer a number of recreational activities and opportunities to the community.”

Dorchester County says a groundbreaking for the new facility will be held in 2024.
