Coroner ID’s man killed after being hit by NCPD vehicle

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The Charleston County Coroner has identified the man who died following a vehicle chase and NCPD officer-involved shooting.

John Daniels, 27, from New Jersey, died from injuries sustained after being struck by a North Charleston Police vehicle.

Officers were involved in a vehicle pursuit with a male suspect, identified as Daniels, around 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 21, which ended on Highway 78 near Shipley Street.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said gunfire was exchanged between the Daniels and officers, in addition to Daniels being struck by the NCPD vehicle.

Daniels was taken to Trident Medical, where he died at 10:19 p.m. that night.

SLED is investigating this incident, which is standard practice for officer-involved shootings in South Carolina.

No police officers were injured during this incident, and all officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per NCPD policy.
