WATCH: Dashcam video shows deadly Feb. 2 standoff, house fire in Summerville

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – It’s been over a month since a man was found dead after leading Summerville officers in a pursuit and engaging them in gunfire at a home in the Robynwyn neighborhood.

Video obtained by News 2 on Wednesday revealed a timeline of those events which included seeing the suspect strike a patrol unit, the sound of gunfire, and a large fire that destroyed the Lilac Drive home.

The incident took place on the afternoon of February 2 when officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 78 near Iris Street. The suspect vehicle is seen backing into the patrol unit, damaging his passenger door, and taking off.

The suspect, identified as 51-year-old John Baldwin, later stopped his vehicle after a brief pursuit and barricaded himself inside his home on Lilac Drive for hours.

You can hear multiple gunshots being fired at different points in the dash camera video. Summerville Police Chief Doug Wright previously said that Baldwin had fired shots at a SWAT robot deployed near his home.

While you cannot see Baldwin exit the home, you can hear an exchange of gunfire sometime after smoke began coming from the home’s roofline. Officials with Summerville Police said Baldwin had exited his home heavily armed and began firing from the backyard.

Mixed with the sound of gunshots are the loud popping sounds as ammunition ignited during the house fire.

“When the home was on fire, we were very concerned because we did know, based on the information we were provided, that there was a lot of ammunition inside of the home. If you are familiar with ammunition, inside of the casing it has black gun powder and if ignited or a heat source gets to it, it can cause it to discharge,” explained Chief Wright during a February 6 press conference.

Ultimately, police say Baldwin was found dead in the home’s backyard. His official cause of death has not been released; however, Dorchester County Coroner’s Office said Baldwin would undergo an autopsy. It was noted that preliminary reports show Baldwin sustained two bullet wounds – but it’s unclear if they were self-inflicted or by law enforcement.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called to investigate the incident.
