Judge sentences man in crash that killed off-duty Charleston County Deputy in 2022

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — A man charged for a crash that killed an off-duty Charleston County Detention Deputy in June 2022 was sentenced on Thursday.

Ryan Dalesandro was given a 10-year suspended term sentence by Judge Bentley Price, which means he will serve five years’ probation after he pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless homicide in a crash that killed LeRhonda Bomar.

The collision occurred on June 14, 2022. According to state prosecutors at the sentencing, Bomar was attempting to make a U-turn on Rivers Avenue at Greenridge Road so she could enter her neighborhood after her work shift.

While in the middle of making the turn, a vehicle driven by Dalesandro t-boned Bomar’s vehicle. The state prosecutor said Dalesandro was traveling 86 mph in a 45 mph zone a few seconds before he slammed into Bomar’s vehicle, and if he had not been driving that fast, Bomar would still be alive. She died at the scene.

After the crash, Dalesandro turned himself into the North Charleston Police Department. He was released on a $50,000 surety bond.

During the hearing, Dalesandro spoke to Bomar’s family and former corrections coworkers, saying he never meant to hurt her and that he thinks of the crash every day and will continue to for the rest of his life.

Family and former coworkers of Bomar asked Judge Price to give Dalesandro the maximum sentence, tearfully noting how she “lost her life senselessly.” They also said Dalesandro might spend time away from his family due to the sentencing, but he will still be able to return, unlike Bomar.

Judge Price set Dalesandro’s probation condition at 85 hours of community service.
