Charleston Water reports overflow at Plum Island facility due to heavy rain
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Heavy rain has caused an overflow at a Charleston Water System facility.
The utility provider said Saturday morning that partially treated wastewater began overflowing a secondary treatment basin at its Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant into Dill Creek.
People should avoid the area until follow-up sampling confirms it is safe.
Officials with Charleston Water also warned that heavy rain and tidal impacts could prompt sanitary overflows.
“Residents and pets should avoid areas if/where manholes are overflowing,” the utility company said.
If you notice an overflowing manhole, you are asked to report it to Charleston Water at (843) 727-6800.
