Alleged stabbing downtown leads to pursuit prompting standoff, lockdown in Mt Pleasant

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) —- Charleston Police responded to a reported stabbing Tuesday night, which led to a vehicle pursuit that ended in the parking lot of the Charleston Marriott in Mount Pleasant.

No arrests have been made, and law enforcement is currently negotiating with the suspect in a parking lot between Coleman Boulevard and Johnnie Dodds Boulevard. As a result, the area is currently closed, said Sgt. Anthony Gibson with CPD.

Police responded around 9 p.m. to the intersection of King Street and Engel Street for a stabbing report. The suspect fled, which led to a pursuit across the Arthur Ravenel Bridge. Law enforcement contained the suspect’s vehicle in the parking lot on Darby Magrath Boulevard.

Officials could be heard over a megaphone asking the suspect to exit the vehicle for arrest.

CPD’s Special Operations Division and the Crisis Negotiations Team are currently working to resolve the situation and apprehend the suspect, said Sgt. Gibson.

News 2 sees what appears to be agents breaking the suspect vehicle’s window and deploying tear gas inside the car.
