Fans at Charleston bars cheer on Cougars in CAA Championship

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Tuesday was a good night to be a fan of the College of Charleston Men’s Basketball team!

The Cougars beat Stony Brook in title game of the 2024 Jersey Mike’s CAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Washington, D.C. Back in Charleston, fans cheered on the team from inside local bars.

“It’s fun. We have a great coach, we have a great team, he gets the boys to play together. He gets them fired up before each game, gets them to play as one,” said Matthew Erdner, who graduated from College of Charleston in 2020.

C of C fans filled Share House in Downtown Charleston for a second night in a row, hoping to see another Cougar victory out of D.C.

“It was exciting to come and watch last night. They played a really good game against Towson,” said CofC Senior Isabel Causey.

Keith Benjamin, the owner of Share House, shared in the excitement.

“We’re stoked that they’re in the final and really excited to be able to host,” Benjamin told News 2.

Colby Breault, a 2019 College of Charleston graduate, was confident the night would end in a win.

“Having gone to school here for a while and watching them improve year over year, it’s definitely fun to actually get enticed in the sports here ‘cause its been a while since they’ve been enticing to watch,” Breault said.

Another local bar, Rusty Bull Brewing Co., is a friend of the Cougar fandom, being just a short walk away from the campus and TD Arena. They celebrated the big game with beer specials.

“It’s just a great space for people to come and enjoy watching the games and really celebrating the campus,” said Mark Adams, the general manager for Rusty Bull.

Share House plans to host more watch parties following the win, according to Benjamin.
