Man accused in downtown stabbing led officers in chase, barricaded inside van
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A 39-year-old man accused in a downtown stabbing was arrested late Tuesday night after leading law enforcement in a vehicle chase.
Officers with the Charleston Police Department (CPD) were dispatched to the intersection of King and Engle streets around 9:00 p.m. in response to a stabbing.
Police were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect took off and a chase ensued. “During the pursuit, the suspect intentionally backed into a CPD police cruiser and then attempted to do so a second time,” said Sgt. Anthony Gibson.
The pursuit stopped in a parking lot off Magrath Darby Boulevard in Mount Pleasant and the suspect barricaded himself inside the vehicle and refused to exit.
Charleston PD’s Special Operations Division responded to the scene to help resolve the situation. The suspect, 39-year-old Anthony Doty, was taken into custody around midnight.
Doty is charged with attempted murder, two counts of assault and battery 1st degree, and possession of a weapon (knife) during the commission of a violent crime. He was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
Officials said the stabbing victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was treated at the scene by EMS.
The Mount Pleasant Police Department and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office assisted during the incident.
