Deputies find nearly 7,000 gift cards during Georgetown County traffic stop that may be tied to Florida thefts
GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities in Georgetown County say they found nearly 7,000 gift cards during a Wednesday afternoon traffic stop that may have been stolen in Florida.
Deputies with the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office were alerted that a vehicle entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as stolen was spotted traveling on South Fraser Street.
A traffic stop was initiated on the 2018 Lexis NX3. Inside were two men who deputies said were wanted for questioning out of Florida in connection with gift card thefts, a report showed.
During the stop, deputies said they found two cloth Walmart bags in the passenger floorboard that appeared to be filled with Apple gift cards. A bag of small tools, razor blades, glue, and a laptop were discovered during a search along with nine similar bags that contained various gift cards.
The vehicle was registered to the driver, according to the report. Deputies contacted the reporting agency out of Florida, who informed them that multiple law enforcement agencies in the Sunshine State and Georgia were working on charges for a string of gift card thefts and fraud.
“Deputies were given a BOLO from Florida containing pictures of both driver and passenger in the same clothes, in a Walmart where it was believed they were taking various gift cards,” the report said.
