Charleston parades through downtown to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- The Lowcountry celebrates St. Patrick’s Day big.

Saturday morning the city of Charleston held a parade downtown.

For some, it was their first.

“This is our first parade in Charleston, typically we go to the one in Manhattan,” parade watcher, Stephen Reddan said.

Others have been a part of it for years.

“It’s been a long time, probably about 15 years, parade veteran, Tommy Hendricks said.

It’s a Charleston tradition that draws huge crowds yearly, with organizations across the Lowcountry being represented.

There are a ton of things to enjoy, but the music is always a fan favorite.

“The bagpipes without a doubt, and celebrating our heritage,” Reddan said.

Also the traditional St. Patrick’s Day food, a lot of people eat after the parade….

“All I can think of when I think St. Patrick’s Day is corn beef hash,” Bishop England student, Peter Fulton said.

But for some, the tradition and meaning of the holiday is their reason to celebrate.

“We look forward to going to church and remembering that St Patrick took the Lord to Ireland,” Parade watcher, Bill Snow said.
