New traffic lanes open on Glenn McConnell Parkway
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – New traffic lanes will open on Glenn McConnell Parkway in West Ashley as crews begin moving the orange barrels on Friday morning.
The purpose of the recently constructed traffic lanes is to reduce traffic congestion in the area and improve bike/pedestrian access. The improvements are made along a 2.1-mile section of Glenn McConnell Parkway starting near Magwood Drive to the intersection of Bees Ferry.
Officials say it could take several hours for the lane to be completely clear due to the crews working against the flow of traffic. They will be working to move the barrels from the third travel lane in each direction.
“It is wonderful to see this project come to fruition,” said Councilmember Kylon Middleton. “I know residents have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the new lanes to help ease traffic in this heavily traveled area.”
After the cones are pulled, officials say the project will be considered “substantially complete.” Drivers in the area will still notice crews working after the traffic lanes open as they will be attending to the landscape in the area.
“I am thrilled this project is being completed on time and within the budget,” said Councilmember Brantley Moody. “We appreciate this community`s patience as our team worked diligently to improve traffic flow, safety, and add pedestrian upgrades to the project area.”
