Summerville Police identify off-duty officer who shot man during altercation Wednesday
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD ) — The Summerville Police Department has identified the off-duty officer who shot a man following an altercation at a Chick-fil-A.
Patrolman First Class Anthony DeLustro and Michael O’Neal, 39, were engaged in an altercation outside Chick-fil-A on North Main Street Wednesday afternoon. What led to the altercation is still unknown.
Information released from the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) revealed DeLustro shot O’Neal sometime during the incident.
O’Neal was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a North Carolina native and reportedly in town on business, according to the Berkeley County Coroner.
“On behalf of the Summerville Police Department, we offer our thoughts and prayers to the O’Neal family for the tragic loss of their loved one, Michael. Yesterday, I spoke with Michael’s parents and offered my sincere condolences,” said Summerville Police Chief Douglas Wright.
Chief Wright also wrote, “Our police officer was treated and released after suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Our deepest prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time.”
O’Neal’s family released a statement to an NBC affiliate: “We appreciate the love and support of the communities and friends. This is a senseless, difficult time and not deserved by anyone. Michael was hilarious, loving, and the light of the room in any situation. We appreciate privacy at this time while we have a chance to grieve our loss.”
SLED was immediately requested to investigate this incident, Chief Wright said, given they are an impartial and independent agency.
“I want to remind everyone that this procedure takes time,” Wright explained. “Please be patient and trust the process. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with SLED with further inquiries.”
Employment information provided by Summerville PD shows DeLustro has over 30 years in law enforcement, including beginning his career with the New York City Police Department in 1980 and two stints with the Summerville Police Department.
DeLustro has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation into the incident is complete, according to Summerville PD.
SLED is investigating this incident.
