City of North Charleston to unveil new athletic complex Thursday
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – North Charleston will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday for its new sports complex.
The new complex includes everything from a swimming pool to a roller rink. It’s set to be fully open to the public as many area school districts hold spring break.
The $25 million sports complex broke ground roughly a year ago, replacing the old Danny Jones sports complex, off Mixson Ave. near Park Circle.
Within the new venue, you’ll find a 25-meter competitive pool, a gymnasium that could be used for multiple sports from basketball to pickleball, five new tennis courts, a roller rink, multi-purpose fields, and a walking trail.
While city leaders say the complex is free and open to the public, there will be a fee to utilize the indoor swimming pool.
“Obviously when you build a $27 million facility that is very accessible to a lot of folks, they can’t help but be excited. We think we’re going to get a lot of good usage out of it. We haven’t had that facility up and running in about a year and a half, so folks have been kind of waiting for this project to get completed and we’re excited that they’re finally going to be able to use it,” said North Charleston’s recreation director, TJ Rostin.
North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess and many city leaders are expected to attend Thursday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony which is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
The complex will stay open until 7:00 p.m. Thursday for tours, but won’t be fully open to the public until Monday, April 1. The complex’s outside amenities will open on Friday.
