Colleton County firefighter leaves hospital after suffering heart attack during training
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A firefighter from Colleton County who suffered a heart attack during training has been discharged from the hospital.
Nearly 70 firefighters lined the halls at Trident Medical Center on Thursday in celebration of Colleton County Fire Rescue firefighter Jason Fenstermaker’s recovery.
Fenstermaker, 49, was participating in a training exercise earlier this week with various other agencies when he went into cardiac arrest shortly after completing the program.
Bystanders, all trained paramedics, immediately began applying advanced cardiovascular life support. The firefighter was taken to Colleton Medical Center where he was stabilized and then flown to Trident Medical Center’s Heart Center.
“Today, in celebration of his recovery, first responders from around the Lowcountry celebrated with him and his family as he was discharged,” said leaders with Trident Health.
