Summerville Police respond to video of minor detained outside Walmart

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — Summerville Police have responded to a video of a juvenile being detained outside of Walmart Monday.

Police said a video capturing parts of the incident at Walmart on North Main Street has been circulating.

Summerville officers were on patrol when they observed a male minor selling roses at the Walmart entrance, the agency said. Police then asked the juvenile to leave because he did not have a business license.

Allegedly, the juvenile began using profanity towards police and would not cooperate. SPD then attempted to detain the minor due to him “not obeying lawful orders,” the agency wrote. The minor then began to resist and allegedly punched an officer in the face, leaving an injury on her eye.

Summerville Police said that the officer had to be treated by EMS.

Eventually, police detained the minor suspect without injuries, and he was released to his mother. The minor was charged with assault and battery in the third degree. The juvenile’s identity will not be released, SPD said.
