Man arrested for assaulting Georgetown County deputy claimed he was the first sheriff and a federal agent, report says

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A man was arrested last week for allegedly assaulting a deputy outside a Browns Ferry Road home.

A deputy with the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) initially responded to a call regarding a dispute where the victim said a neighbor came over and began yelling and threatened to kill them.

The victim showed deputies a video on their cellphone that allegedly showed the offender chasing one of the victims around a truck and stating that he was going to kill him, according to an incident report.

The deputy then went to speak with the offender. While attempting to exit the patrol vehicle, the man tried to push the door closed and stated the deputy had no right to be on his property, the report said.

A report from the sheriff’s office said the man – identified as 48-year-old Patrick Cooper – stated he was the first sheriff and a federal agent. Cooper also said that he owned all the property on Browns Ferry Road because he pays all the taxes.

“The offender would become aggressive then clam [sic] down. The offender kept backing towards his house, I asked the offender if he would go step in front of my car. He became aggravated,” the report said.

As the deputy worked to de-escalate the situation, the report shows that Cooper continued backing up and even grabbed a shopping cart and moved it between them.

When the deputy attempted to detain Cooper, the man began running to his back door and struck the deputy in the lip with a closed fist, the report said.

Cooper was taken to the Georgetown County Detention Center where he was charged with assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest. Jail records show he was given a $5,000 bond.
