Summerville police chief to address murder charge against former officer

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD)- Summerville Police Department Chief Doug Wright will address the public Thursday regarding a former officer who was charged with murder this week.

The press conference is expected to begin at 2 p.m.

Anthony DeLustro, 64, was charged in connection with the March 20 death of Michael O’Neal outside a Chick-fil-A restaurant on North Main Street.

Affidavits provided by SLED show DeLustro was off-duty when he engaged in a confrontation with the victim. O’Neal was shot and killed at the scene.

Employment information provided by Summerville PD shows DeLustro has over 30 years in law enforcement, including beginning his career with the New York City Police Department in 1980 and two stints with the Summerville Police Department.

DeLustro was placed on administrative leave after the incident; however, Summerville PD said he was a former officer in their Wednesday afternoon update.

DeLustro appeared before a magistrate judge Wednesday evening and was denied bond.
