Man drove wrong way on Folly Beach, passed out in police custody: FBDPS
FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCBD) – A man who was seen traveling the wrong way on a Folly Beach roadway Thursday night also struck a vehicle and attempted to flee from law enforcement, officials said.
Sgt. Zach Halpern with the Folly Beach Department of Public Safety said officers attempted to stop a vehicle on E. Artic Avenue for driving the wrong way on a one-way road.
When the driver saw blue lights, Sgt. Halpern said the man backed into an unattended vehicle before speeding away from the scene. The vehicle eventually stopped, and the driver was placed under arrest.
A pistol was found in plain view at the bottom of the driver’s seat. Sgt. Halpern said the man was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his criminal history which included past murder charges.
While in custody, Sgt. Halpern said the man passed out, believed to be from drug intake, and required medical condition. The man was taken to an area hospital where he was cleared and then booked into the Charleston County Detention Center.
MDMA was found in the man’s groin area during an intake search at the jail, officials said.
The man, 40-year-old Anthony Shaun Kelly, is being charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of MDMA, failure to stop for blue lights, and hit and run of an unattended vehicle and property.
His bond was set at $242, according to jail records.
A passenger was also cited and released for having an open container, which police said she admitted was hers.
