Lowcountry Food Bank to offer free healthy meal options to children during the summer months

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A food bank serving much of the Lowcountry is working to ensure children have access to nutritious food during the summer, especially when school meals are unavailable.

The Lowcountry Food Bank announced Tuesday it will participate in the Summer Food Service Program to offer healthy food options to children aged 18 and under who need it most.

The program begins June 11 and runs for eight weeks.

Distribution sites are chosen based on accessibility, where food service gaps exist, and their capacity to serve children most in need. These sites could include day camps, parks and recreation centers, public libraries, and faith-based organizations.

According to the Lowcountry Food Bank, the food insecurity rate for South Carolina’s 10 coastal counties is 12.1%. “This is equivalent to 184,480 of our neighbors, of whom 50,270 are children,” the organization said.
