Charleston lawyer and former senator arrested second time in 2024
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — A former South Carolina senator arrested in March for a hit-and-run is in jail again for an assault charge.
John Kuhn is currently at the Al Cannon Detention Center on Thursday awaiting a bond hearing, according to county jail records.
News 2 has requested the report on what led up to the arrest for assault. This story will be updated upon reply.
In March, Kuhn was booked for hit-and-run property damage and improper passing. He was released on a $10,232 PR bond. According to court records, the status of that case is still pending.
An incident report from March said while Kuhn was driving his SUV, he passed a Toyota 4Runner waiting to turn, striking the driver-side mirror and causing pieces to fall off. A man approached Kuhn’s vehicle while he was waiting at a stop light after the incident, verbally engaging with him.
The man stood in front of Kuhn’s vehicle; however, Kuhn continued to drive. News 2 obtained a video taken from a witness, in which you can see Kuhn as he turns the wheel of his SUV and hear his car accelerate and screech. The male standing in front of his SUV is knocked to the side when the SUV accelerates and rolls into the middle of the intersection.
In the police report, when officers spoke with Kuhn, he said he drove around the 4Runner to avoid the man who approached his vehicle and did not realize he had struck their car.
Kuhn served as a senator for District 43 from 2001- 2003. District 43 serves Berkeley and Charleston counties. He is a current partner of Kuhn and Kuhn Law Firm.
