Mount Pleasant begins renovating Shem Creek shrimp dock and processing facility

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – A refurbishment of Mount Pleasant’s shrimp dock and processing facility aims to bolster the local shrimping community.

Mount Pleasant town leaders said renovations at the Shem Creek Shrimp Dock and Shrimp Processing facility include removing and replacing the current boardwalk and pier, and rebuilding the existing structure between the dock and shore.

The roughly $3 million project will improve accessibility for both workers and visitors, enhance resilience against weather conditions, and upgrade infrastructure that will support the shrimping fleet’s needs.

Town leaders said the covered processing facility will undergo extensive repairs and improvements to provide better processing operations.

“The renovation of our shrimp docks and processing facility is a testament to our commitment to preserving Mount Pleasant’s shrimping legacy while ensuring modern and safe operations,” said Project Manager, Kevin Mitchell. “We are excited to see these improvements benefit our community and support our local shrimping industry.”

Fresh shrimp and seafood sales at the dock by Tarvins Seafood will continue despite the construction.

The renovation project is expected to be completed by July of next year.
