North Charleston water main repaired, road destroyed by flood water

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)—Residents in North Charleston’s Accabee neighborhood had water restored Wednesday after a busted pipe flooded streets in the subdivision. However, the flooding destroyed Baker Avenue.

Mike Saia, a spokesperson for the Charleston Water System, said the road will take up to a week to reopen.

Crews worked overnight after the break to have the water service repaired by 2:30 p.m. City officials said they went door to door handing out bottled water and other supplies to residents in an effort to get them through until the break was repaired.

Saia explained that the large break started as a small leak in the community.

“Yesterday, midday, we got a call telling us there was a very small leak on this water main, and we came out, we investigated it and determined that it could sit and be scheduled for later,” Saia said. “Lo and behold, fate took its course and blew a big giant hole in a 24-inch water main, a hole big enough for me to crawl into.”

About 250 people were initially left without water, according to Saia, but that number dwindled to around 55 after crews started work. No homes were damaged, and no residents were displaced by the flooding.
