Man seriously injured in gas tanker crash off I-95 in Colleton County
COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A man suffered multiple injuries Monday after his gas tanker crashed while traveling along I-95 in Colleton County.
Officials with Colleton County Fire Rescue (CCFR) said the truck and fuel trailer left the interstate at the McLeod overpass when it drove down the embankment, struck a guard rail, and then crossed McLeod Road and hit a guard rail on the other side.
“The truck then drove up the south embankment,” officials said. “The truck received heavy damage.”
Fire-rescue officials said an off-duty firefighter from Hendersonville, North Carolina was traveling on I-95 at the time and stopped to help the driver before emergency crews arrived.
“Fortunately, the trailer was new and was not carrying a load,” officials said.
The driver of that fuel tanker was taken to the trauma center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) and State Transit Police are investigating the crash.
