Sullivan’s Island and Charleston Water System settle over water dispute

SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – The Town of Sullivan’s Island has reached a $1.1 million agreement with Charleston Water System (CWS) over a contractual dispute.

A water supply contract between Charleston Water and the town that went into effect in July 1994 was set to last 30 years. A rate dispute emerged when it came time to renew the contract.

Charleston Water said the town owed them over a million dollars as of March and the utility company intended to cut off the water supply if the balance was not paid in full.

That deadline was avoided on Tuesday after the two finalized an agreement. Charleston Water and Sullivan’s Island settled for just over a million dollars, or more specifically, $1,138,636.62, and signed another 40-year contract.

The rate also includes an increase in water for the town, providing an extra 100,000 gallons per day.

The agreement was approved by Charleston Water System’s board after the town signed off on it earlier this week.
