Local construction group provides workers with safety tips on staying cool in the heat
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – Temperatures are high in the Lowcountry, and just because it’s hot does not mean work stops for the many construction contractors who often work outside for hours. On Tuesday, crews at the Samet construction site at Carnes Crossroads got a sweet treat as they learned about heat safety.
“So, every year during the summertime, we have our fresh fruit stand where we show appreciation to the guys and girls who work so hard on the job sites. We try our best to combat this heat with high water-content fruit,” said Josh Himes PhD, a Regional Safety Manager for Samet Cooperation.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, heat exhaustion can happen in just minutes for people working hard in the heat. Construction workers spend hours doing physical labor in the hot sun, which makes them especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
Doctors from Trident Medical Center said heat stroke is a silent killer, and knowing the signs can be the difference between life and death.
“Decreased pulse, Nausea, you start vomiting. You start noticing signs like that, and you haven’t been sick. Those are signs that potentially concern whether you need to get inside, you may need water or get out of the sun for a little bit,” said Dr. Bo Hatcher, a first-year surgeon resident at Trident Medical Center.
Officials with Samet cooperation agree; they said education is critical to keeping people safe, and that’s why they’re investing in safety awareness events and hope other companies do the same.
