With the 2024 election cycle in full swing, there is no better time than the present to share a brand new video series that documents the voting journey for Black people in America over the past six decades.

The Black Ballot is a multi-episodic docuseries exploring everything from how the passing of the Civil Rights Act led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to the roles elected Black officials have played and everything in between to show how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go in the ongoing fight for voting rights.

Through riveting and spirited conversations and explanations by activists, passionate celebrities, political historians and influencers and more, The Black Ballot places a spotlight on the lessons we can learn from our past in order to understand how history continues to repeat itself in our present day.

Each episode, in chronological order, takes a deep dive into how American presidents’ decisions and policies have impacted the short- and long-term trajectory of the conditions for African Americans, particularly as it pertains to voting, series executive producer Luke Burke explained.

“Our rich history is so eerily reflective of our present time. The 2024 election cycle coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act is the perfect time for African Americans to both reflect and celebrate our journey in America’s democracy,” Burke said in a statement. “The Black Ballot series will explore some of the most impactful decisions made by presidential administration over the past 60 years, providing context and nuance to the African American experience.”

The list of people providing commentary in The Black Ballot is noteworthy, including but not limited to independent presidential candidate Dr. Cornel West, Dr. Bernice King, Tarana Burke, Rev. Dr. Ben Chavis, Jr., activists Tamika D. Mallory and Brittany Packnett Cunningham and journalists Joy-Ann Reid, Tiffany D. Cross, Don Lemon, Reecie Colbert and Clay Cane.

The Black Ballot video series is part of NewsOne’s larger eponymous coverage centering Black people and the Black experience when it comes to elections and politics overall.
