Donald Trump Reportedly Won’t Attend Funeral Of The Man Who Died During Failed Assassination

Last week, we published an op-ed piece about why Black people are not grieving the failed assassination of Donald Trump. Well, you know who else has never really grieved or shown any sense of urgency or tragedy regarding the shooting? Trump and his supporters.

In fact, they have largely celebrated the event as possibly the final nail in the coffin of President Joe Biden’s reelection bid, and considering the fact that Trump couldn’t even let Secret Service agents get him out of harm’s way before recklessly poking his head and his fist up for the viral photo-op that hasn’t stopped circulating on MAGA social media accounts since it seems to be this way by design. But through all of the rejoicing and political posturing in the MAGA world, something—or rather someone—is being lost: the person who actually died during the shooting.

Earlier this week, sources told TribLive that Trump will likely not be attending the funeral for Corey Comperatore, the Buffalo Township man killed at Trump’s rally Saturday in Butler County. The funeral is Friday, but Trump can’t be there because he traveled to Milwaukee for another night of the Lies and Dog Whistles Convention, also known as the RNC, where he officially accepted his party’s nomination for president.

From TribLive:

Freeport Mayor Zach Gent, who has been in close collaboration with local law enforcement as the borough plans to host the public visitation Thursday and parts of the funeral procession Friday, said he was told Trump would not be in the area Thursday for Comperatore’s public visitation services.

Gent was not aware of Trump’s plans for Friday but said it would be “in his character” for the former president to attend in support of Comperatore’s wife, Helen, and two daughters, Allyson and Kaylee, as well as the broader community.

“I think if they’re able to pull this off in less than a week, it’s not a political show or a political move,” Gent said. “I think it’s an emotional, heartfelt decision for him to come here if he does.”

Trump may not be able to attend the funeral or any other event to honor Comperatore, but it’s fine because he gave a nice “thoughts and prayers”-type speech at the RNC where he called him an “unbelievable person” but left out the part about how he ain’t got time to pay his respects at the proper venue.

Honestly, it’s not even about Trump declining to attend the funeral—it’s the fact that through all of the fanfare and political milking of the shooting by Trump, his constituents and the GOP, Comperatore’s name has scarcely even been mentioned. Again, they’re celebrating the shooting regardless of the life that was lost, and they’re doing the bare minimum to include and honor the real victim, who was likely a Trump supporter, which is a not-so-subtle reminder of how little Trump and the GOP actually care about the common folk they claim to be fighting for.
