Corrections worker assaulted by inmate over cellphone, weapon

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — A corrections officer is recovering Wednesday after being attacked by an inmate at a state prison in Ridgeville.

The SC Department of Corrections said the officer was assaulted when he attempted to confiscate a cell phone and a weapon from an inmate in the Lieber Correctional recreation yard.

After the attack, workers confiscated three additional weapons from inmates at Lieber.

The officer was taken to a local hospital, where he is receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

SCDC did not provide an update on what happened to the inmate who attacked the officer.
