Tax Free Weekend draws in shoppers to Tanger Outlets

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Shopping bags at Tanger Outlets were full Friday for the first day of the 2024 South Carolina Tax Free Weekend.

“I got my shoes. I got scrubs and a jacket and just some other going out clothes,” shopper, Alayah Moore, said.

For 72 hours only, South Carolina’s 6% sales tax and applicable local taxes are wiped off eligible purchases. The South Carolina Department of Revenue said items generally include clothing and accessories, school supplies, computers, software, printers, and certain bed and bath supplies.

“Tax Free Weekend is very close to what you would normally see for like a Thanksgiving or Black Friday weekend. So, it’s our second busiest weekend of the year so we highly recommend people get here sooner rather than later so that you can make sure you’re scoring all of the best things, all of the best deals,” said Andrea Gervacio, the Marketing Director for Tanger Charleston.

The Sales Tax Holiday comes yearly and coincides with back-to-school shopping. Azalia Owens is from Columbia, SC and said she and her family make the trip to North Charleston every year for Tax Free Weekend.

“It is very helpful because a lot of stores are doing sales around that time too so it’s like really making you want to get some deals,” Owens told News 2.

According to the state, shoppers in the Palmetto State purchased more than $30.4 million in tax free items last year. Moore said its an opportunity to pay what you see on the price tag.

“It helped a lot. Especially considering I am getting a lot since I am going to college. So, it was really nice,” Moore shared.

Tax Free Weekend will last through Sunday. State officials said eligible items can be purchased online too. For more information what items are exempt from the tax, click here.
