Gov. McMaster declares State of Emergency for South Carolina
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – Governor Henry McMaster today issued Executive Order 2024-16, declaring a State of Emergency in preparation for the potential effects of Tropical Storm Debby. The executive order activates the South Carolina Emergency Operations Plan, enabling all state agencies to coordinate resources efficiently.
“Team South Carolina is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Debby and has begun preparing for its potential impact on our state,” said Governor McMaster. “With significant rainfall forecasted for the next few days, it is critical that residents in potentially affected areas start making preparations and plans today—in case it is necessary to take quick action.”
The National Hurricane Center forecasts that Tropical Storm Debby will intensify before making landfall as a hurricane in Florida on Monday. The storm is expected to slow down and impact South Carolina early this week, bringing heavy rainfall that could cause life-threatening flash, urban, and river flooding. Strong winds and storm surges are also anticipated.
South Carolina residents and visitors in vulnerable areas are urged to review their emergency plans and consider necessary actions should the storm threaten their safety. It is essential to monitor local news and updates from the National Hurricane Center, especially for those in low-lying coastal regions.
