Dorchester County storm shelters opening Monday ahead of Tropical Storm Debby

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — Tropical Storm Debby is closing in on the Lowcountry, and Dorchester County officials have announced two pet-friendly storm shelters to open.

Residents and pets living in low-lying or flood-prone areas who are unable to relocate before T.S. Debby’s historic rainfall can stay at two shelters, which will open at 8 p.m. Monday.

Charles B. Dubose Middle School, 1005 Dubose School Road, Summerville, will open as a shelter, as will Woodland High School, 4128 US-78, in Dorchester.

Those seeking shelter will need to bring:

• Personal identification (ID)
• Important documents (insurance papers, medical records, etc.)
• Medications and medical supplies
• Bedding (blankets, pillows, sleeping bags)
• Personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.)
• Food and water (non-perishable items)
• Clothing and shoes
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• Childcare items (diapers, formula, toys, etc.)
• Pet supplies (leash, carrier, food, water, bowls, collar with ID, and vaccination records)

Officials encourage pet owners to bring comfort items for their animals and keep them in a carrier or on a leash during their stay.
