Tornado warning issued in Lowcountry counties, tornado confirmed on Edisto Beach
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A tornado warning is in effect for two Lowcountry counties until 10:15 p.m.
A tornado was confirmed by officials on Edisto Beach in Colleton County. Colleton County deputies say they have received reports of property damage and several downed power lines.
Palmetto Boulevard is impassible as a result until surveyors can evaluate the damage.
National Weather Service forecasters say a severe thunderstorm line moving from Bennetts Point south of Kiawah Island was spotted moving northwest at 25 mph and capable of producing a thunderstorm.
Charleston, Colleton, and Beaufort Counties are under the warning until 10:15 p.m. The rotation stems from thunderstorms produced by Tropical Storm Debby.
Locations heavily impacted include Johns Island, Seabrook Island, Edisto Beach, Kiawah Island, Edisto Island, Bennetts Point, Bears Bluff, Meggett and Rockville. Forecasters say heavy rainfall may hide this tornado from view.
Officials advise those on the path to seek shelter immediately.
