1964 – Born in Nebraska
Tim Walz (60) is a West Point, Nebraska-native, and grew up working on his family’s farm.
1981 – Enlists in the Military
Immediately after graduating from high school, Walz enlists in the National Guard at 17 years old (modeling after his father who had previously served in the Korean War). He went on to serve for 24 years—eventually becoming the highest-ranking retired enlisted soldier ever to serve in Congress.
1981 – Graduates College
This Chadron State College (Nebraska) graduate earned a social science degree. In 2001, he earned his Master of Science in educational leadership from Minnesota State University.
1994 – Marries Wife, Gwen Walz
He and his wife, Gwen Waltz, married in 1994. They first met while both working as teachers (her as an English teacher and him a social studies teacher and football coach). The couple became colleagues again after moving to Minnesota—where Walz now serves as Governor—in 1996. They both worked at Mankato West High School.
2001: First-time Parent Era
Tim and Gwen have two children. They became first-time parents to their daughter, Hope, in 2001. They welcomed their son, Gus, in 2006.

2004+: Starts (and Succeeds) in Politics
Walz began his political career by volunteering for John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign. He was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat in 2007 (beating the incumbent, Republican Gil Gutknecht) according to USAToday.
Walz was re-elected in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.
2018: Elected as Minnesota Governor
First elected as the Governor of Minnesota in 2018, and re-elected in 2022. He became known for his strong views on education, healthcare reform, women’s rights, etc.
2024: Kamala Harris Picks Walz as Her Running Mate
