Large sinkhole opens on Romney Street

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- A large sinkhole opened in downtown Charleston Wednesday night, according to first responders.

The sinkhole is located on Romney Street between King and Meeting Streets.

Officials said the Romney Street off-ramp from Interstate 26 will remain open, but drivers must take Meeting Street after exiting.

Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel while Tropical Storm Debby continues to impact the area.
