As a straight natural, finding the balance between using the right amount of heat without going overboard is key for hair health. My requirements are simple: heat-styling tools that are gentle on my mane, fast-drying, and offer attachments suitable for my 4c mane. So, when I was gifted Conair’s DigitalAIRE Drying Wand, I was excited to see what the hype was about.

Inside the Conair DigitalAIRE Drying Wand’s features

In case you’ve been out of the loop, Conair’s new offering is designed to smooth, detangle, and volumize your hair during blow-drying. Featuring advanced plasma technology, this tool combines the power of positive and negative ions to help make flyaways and frizz a non-factor. The dryer has a maximum temperature of 255°F and offers three airflow and four temperature settings to complement your routine. The tool also has a 75mph air speed, making fast-drying a reality.

Another standout feature of the tool is its three attachments: a styling pick that detangles, separates, and stretches hair, a straightening brush with ceramic plates that smooth and straighten from root to tip, and a volumizing brush with curved bristles that creates body and movement. The dryer also offers an ultra-care mode that alternates between cool and hot air to help preserve the health of your hair.

My blow-drying process

After exploring the Conair DigitalAIRE Drying Wand’s benefits, it was time to take action. Starting with damp, freshly washed hair, I parted my hair in small sections via twists, applied the Mielle Organics Thermal and Heat Protectant Spray ($11.15, Walmart.com), and started my blowout using the medium dryer speed and the third heat setting.

The first thing that stood out was the drying wand’s weight — it was non-existent. During a typical blow-drying session, I have to take breaks because my arms feel sore. However, I could blow dry my entire mane without any breaks. The styling pick also came in clutch, gliding through my hair without running into any tangles. And while the drying wand gets hot, it’s not hot enough to burn your hands.

After blow-drying my hair, I applied Nae Nae’s Naturals Hair Boost Hair & Scalp Salve ($29+, naenaes.com) and a few drops of my ayurvedic oil blend through my mane from root to tip. Then, I blow-dried my mane again for a few minutes to absorb the products thoroughly.

My final verdict

If I had to rate the Conair DigitalAIRE Drying Wand, I would have to give it a 9.5 out of 10. Unlike other blow dryers, the fact that this offering is truly lightweight is a game-changer. As a natural who prefers to minimize heat usage, the dryer wand’s ultra-care mode and fast-drying capabilities worked hand in hand to cut my blow-dry session time in half. Plus, the styling pick was gentle on my mane and didn’t leave behind any shed hair.

Not to mention, the price of this drying wand, $149, is one most hair mavens can work with. As someone who owns a $400 Dyson Supersonic dryer, Conair’s price tag gives the cult favorite a run for its money. After all, dropping hundreds of dollars on a blow dryer is not in the cards for most people. In other words, the Conair DigitalAIRE Drying Wand checks all of the boxes.
