Construction of mega boat landing in Berkeley County progressing

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)- Construction of a mega boat landing on Lake Moultrie is moving forward, with the hope that it will open as soon as next summer.

The 14-area boat landing is being constructed at the site of the old Atkins landing and campground and Lions Beach. It is a project that has been more than three years in the making.

“I live next to the current boat landing, four houses down,” said Jonna Whipple. “There’s a ton of traffic. They max out on the good days so I think everybody’s looking forward to what’s gonna happen here.”

The 6.5 million project was approved in July 2021 and was expected to take about 18 months to complete, but funding issues stalled the work.

Now, three years later, the work is continuing.

“They haven’t gotten very far, but it’s exciting to see they’ve got the huge mound of dirt gone and then they’ve got the cement pipes and stuff,” Whipple said.

Drainage and electrical infrastructure are also being installed on the property.

The site will include parking for 180 boat trailers and 180 vehicles. Additionally, it will offer six new boat launch ramps with a dock, an event pavilion, a walking trail, and a public swimming beach.

There will also be a separate dock and office constructed for use by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office’s Marine Patrol Unit.

“The part of the lake I live on is on the canal, so you can’t get in the water by house,” Whipple explained. “I’m hoping that we’ll be able to drive down here and let the kids get in the water down at what was Lions Beach.”

Berkeley County officials say they’re hoping to have this project completed and open for the public in the summer of 2025.
