Cars, property damaged by “rampaging” pick-up truck on Charleston’s Eastside

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Several cars and other property are damaged from a “rampaging” pick-up truck on Charleston’s Eastside over the weekend.

“I felt our house shake. It heard like a bomb went off,” said Gary Urich, an Eastside resident.

The startling noise late Friday night brought Urich and his neighbors outside to see what was going on.

“I ran outside to see the guy backing out of the brick wall behind my girlfriend’s house, actually, on the corner,” Robert Infinger told News 2. “And then he just started proceeding down the street hitting just about every car he passed.”

Infinger said he ran to try and stop the large pickup truck on Hanover Street, but it continued its path of destruction.

“Just heard it struggling, continue to press on. Would progress forward, throw it in reverse, continue on. And it just seemed like whoever was in that thing was just trying to get out of here as fast as they could, regardless of what the consequences were,” Urich added.

A small brick wall outside of Urich’s home was destroyed because of the incident. His neighbor’s parked car also took a hit from the truck which he said was driving with two flat tires.

The hit-and-run is under investigation by Charleston Police who said the unknown vehicle hit cars on Reid Street as well. As of Monday evening, there were no reports of any arrests.

The incident raised a major safety concern for residents.

“Obviously he was a major threat to people’s safety. You know, this is a road where there are a lot of pedestrians, a lot of people outside, a lot of people walking home from bars late at night. So, yes, I wanted to try to stop him from potentially hurting anybody else and certainly continuing to damage people’s vehicles,” Infinger said.

The investigation is ongoing.
