Police arrest 18-year-old for armed robbery at West Ashley apartments

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston Police announced they have arrested an 18-year-old in connection to a failed armed robbery that left a 15-year-old dead.

Desean Matthews was arrested and charged with attempted murder and armed robbery.

Investigators say Matthews conspired with a 17-year-old relative of the deceased to rob him at gunpoint Saturday night.

During the attempt that occurred at the Palmilla Apartments on Ashley River Road, the 17-year-old was shot and returned fire, which police say is what killed the 15-year-old. The 15-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene.

The 17-year-old was hospitalized and received treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, Sgt. Chris Stinson, spokesperson for Charleston PD, said.

Matthews is awaiting a bond hearing at Al Cannon Detention Center. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
