Can we get a little commotion for the tan suit?

August 28 marked ten years since President Barack Obama rocked the world with his now-iconic tan suit. He wore the suit in 2014 while addressing the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, as well as Russia’s intervention in Ukraine.

We’re still talking about the moda moment for many reasons.

Yes, the suit was fly because President Obama remains the flyest president in history. Yes, he looked sharp in the suit, as he was rarely ever “caught outside slipping.” And yes, the suit caused a social media frenzy, with everyone weighing in on the then-unconventional choice.

President Barack Obama’s couture suit controversy was a significant moment for the culture.

But what was even more impactful about the lighter-colored professional ensemble was the message it sent. Amid traditional notions of what “presidential attire” should be, the first Black president shook things up.

The two-term president wasn’t just leading the country but also setting his own fashion rules. President Obama helped redefine how the world viewed power, style, and position with that one-button, double-breasted suit.

We were there for it then and are here for it now.

President Obama commemorates his iconic fashion choice with the help of Vice President Kamala Harris.

The former president took to social media on August 28 to commemorate the moment. He not only reminded followers of the suit but also praised Vice President Kamala Harris in the process.

Obama posted side-by-side photos of himself in the tan suit from 2014 and Vice President Harris wearing a similar tan suit at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) last week. Harris donned her suit just days before officially accepting the Democratic presidential nomination.

“How it started. How it’s going. Ten years later, and it’s still a good look!” Obama captioned his posts.

Fans quickly chimed in on the couture comparison. “You both look fresh with classy swag and confidence❤. This side-by-side must go into the history books🔥💙,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Love how the tan suit has become something so much more powerful of a statement than it ever was in history. I am here for it!”

Obama’s playful post followed coverage from several media outlets, which had already noted the connection between Harris’ DNC suit choice and Obama’s iconic look. The New York Times suggested that Harris’ choice was a deliberate departure from traditional red, white, and blue—a sentiment echoed by many on social media.
